Abrasive Wheel Training Course

Course Details:

This course is designed for people who may be required to select, and mount an abrasive or diamond wheel for the use of petrol driven cut off saw, battery or electrically powered cut off saws in the workplace or who need familiarisation or refresher skills with the relevant regulations and practical application of skills in the use of abrasive wheels.

Course Aims:

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with the use of abrasive wheels and ensure they understand their responsibilities under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) in the safe mounting of abrasive wheels and discs on portable machinery and applying the skills to operate the equipment safely.

Course Content:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety issues involved, including PUWER
  • Describe how to store, handle and transport portable abrasive wheel cutters
  • Describe the procedure for dealing with defective equipment
  • Identify and select the correct type of portable abrasive wheel cutter and disc
  • Identify and use dust suppression systems
  • Name suitable personal protective equipment required, for example, eye protection
  • Operate portable abrasive wheel cutters
  • Perform post-operational checks
  • Refuel or recharge a portable abrasive wheel cutter
  • Undertake inspection and pre-start checks

Assessment:

Continuous practical assessment.

Certification:

Learners will receive a certificate of attendance.
