Manual handling relates to the moving of items by either lifting, lowering, carrying pushing or pulling. Manual handling can be carried out with or without the use of lifting aids. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations require an employer to carry out a risk assessment on all manual handling tasks that pose an injury risk. Manual handling injuries are one of the most common causes of workplace injuries.
The employer's duty is to avoid manual handling as far as reasonably practicable if there is a possibility of injury. If this cannot be done, then they must take steps to reduce the risk of manual handling injuries as far as reasonably practicable. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations also places duties on employees.
Manual Handling training aims to provide the candidates with underpinning manual handling awareness and knowledge for them to risk assess and completing manual handling tasks using safe manual handling techniques to eliminate/minimise risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
