The CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day course designed for site managers, or aspiring site managers working in the construction industry or civil engineering settings. It is designed for those with responsibility for managing, monitoring, implementing, and reporting in a construction environment.
The SMSTS course covers relevant health, safety and environmental legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction, and civil engineering industries.
It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the construction site workforce.
There are no formal entry requirements to undertake the CITB SMSTS course, however, delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site manager. Previous health and safety knowledge is recommended. Those without previous health and safety management experience are recommended to sit the two-day CITB SSSTS course. Delegates must be competent in written and spoken English necessary for operating efficiently at site management level.

Assessment will be by an end-of-course multiple choice examination. The delegate must pass the CITB SMSTS Course exam in order to achieve certification for this course.
Delegates who successfully complete the SMSTS course will receive an accredited CITB certificate. CITB SMSTS certification is valid for five years.
